Abandon // Original Motion Picture Score

Music Composed by Clint Mansell featuring Katie Holmes

Clint Mansell is a brilliant composer and has done some awesome film score work; Requiem For A Dream, The Fountain, Pi, and Smokin Aces to name a few. Although I think the film didn't quite work, Mansell does a nice job with Abandon, not my favorite by him, but I like the recurring piano theme thats shows up in "Ice Skating" then again in "First Kiss." And he also incorporates some cool almost trip-hop elements to it, like something you may hear from Portishead.

A Beautiful Mind // Original Motion Picture Score

Music Composed by James Horner

I've always enjoyed James Horner as a composer, and with A Beautiful Mind he managed to create a subtle and beautiful mood of drama and romance while still building tension around the subject of the film. The music works really well for the film, representing Nash's brain working through his complicated genius and also touching on the love his wife showed whilst dealing with his disease. "Of One Heart, Of One Mind" is one of my favorite tracks. Its' soft and gentle piano touches, together with warm strings shows the love of a wife to a husband, complete and unconditional.

Charlotte Church offers her angelic voice on the main theme "All Love Can Be", and this accompaniment is in perfect harmony with the film and Nash's own personal triumph. I will comment that it's nothing new from Horner. Not his best, in my opinion, however, it's a beautiful score and I enjoy Horner's quiet and simple style here.

2012 // Original Motion Picture Score

Music Composed by Harald Kloser & Thomas Wander

I was entertained by the film 2012 at best. It gave you amazing visuals and a story that wasn't new but fun to watch, a little annoying that every moment was an escape by inches... but Roland Emmerich loves to destroy the earth and let's face it... he makes it look good. The score to 2012 delivers just that as well and not much more. There are some great action tracks here which do a good job of conveying the earth-wide destruction happening in the film, and a few nice dramatic themes here too. "The End Is Only The Beginning" is a nice closing track. But I felt it was really missing a theme, something recognizable that you could cheer for when you hear it. It reminds me of Armageddon which in my opinion had an awesome score, much better than 2012. If Trevor Rabin had written 2012 it would have been a much more exciting score.

Also like Armageddon, the film ended with two rock tracks, "Time For Miracles" featuring Adam Lambert and "Fades Like A Photograph" by Filter. But again, maybe they should've followed Rabin's lead and used one of these as a theme in the film. Just a thought.

There's no doubt here that Marco Beltrami was attempting to bring the feel of the Ennio Morricone 'spaghetti western' style to a new audience
